Cripple had the duality of not only being about a physical disability, but the notion of a mental disability as well. The piece set me thinking about how I could express the different threads running through ideas by a complexity of clear and opaque light. This was the lattice series, which eventually developed into the painted pieces.

The first to be painted was Buttress, which was executed in California and about holding things up both physically and psychologically. Further painted pieces expressing movement followed, such as Tango and Slide. Water was the first large piece made solely from blue translucent acrylic sheet. This gave me the idea of a set of wall hangings which I was to execute after the series on language.
